I brought one of my cats to the vet and left her sister at home. Now they dont get along. Suggestions?

These two cats have lived together everyday for a year and they enjoy each others company. Since separating them today for a few hours, the cat left at home will now hiss and growl at the cat I brought to the vet. Any HELPFUL suggestions?

Cat's use their sense of smell much more than humans do. Most animals do, in fact. Pheromones and scent are vital for them. So when you've got the one cat coming home smelling differently, it causes the other cat to react to it. The cat at home doesn't instantly recognize the other as the same cat who left the house earlier.

I can also assume that since only one cat saw the vet, that something was wrong, rather than a routine visit? That kitty probably was stressed over the visit, wasn't feeling well, so will behave differently after coming home.

Try rubbing a blanket or towel that already has the scent of your house and the other cat - on the cat who went to the vet. That can help hasten the re-establishment of the proper scent back onto that cat. It's not necessary, though, as the "house" scent will reestablish itself in a few hours, or day at most.

It's definitely not a territorial or dominance issue, due to one being gone and the other taking over. Many people let their cats outside, so if that was the case, you'd have fights whenever one of them returned from the great outdoors.
That's happened to me before. I have a brother and a sister.

I think one misses the other and the one coming home is feeling groggy from medication or irritated from the visit. When the other greets the kitty that has been gone all day, they don't understand he/she wants to be left alone and they fight. I left mine alone to get aquainted again. Just monitor them to make sure they aren't totally ripping each other apart. I never got to this point but if it's that bad, seperate them in different rooms. They should eventually get along again. Mine did after a couple days when I brought the other to get spayed or neutered. It shouldn't be a big problem. Just simple irritability.
get rid of them both, cats are worthless
Your cat at home smelled the different scent on the cat that wen to the vet. It should be fine very soon once the new scent is gone.
I would think it has something to do with some smell the one got whereever you took it. take the other one to the same place?
the smell from the vet can cause your cat to not recognize the other one. they should settle down in a few days.
lol this is simple the one left at home feels left out take your other kitty on an outing somewhere i think that should fix the jealousy it is possible too that the scent from the other animals got on the cat that went to the vets try rubbing her/him down with a fabric sheet as well to take away any odors that only a cat can smell!
I worked at a vet for 2 years, I noticed that we heard this from alot of pet owners. It has to do with the stress of the situation and the smell of the cat. Scenerio: cat 1 goes to vet and is stressed out from the experience... comes home smells like vet and has an atitude about the visit. Cat 2 smells the vet on cat 1 and is reminded of a bad place and they are now going at it. The vet office can make animals fight at home or on the way home. Some owners bring 2 cats in 1 carrier and they are fine until they leave then they are all business and hate eachother. We ended up giving alot of disposable carriers out.

No jealosy cats are to proud for that lol
Smell! The one that went to the vet now smells different. Give them both a bath, if you can, that way they will both smell different than they did before, but they will both smell the same after the bath. Othen than that?? Give them some time.
I don't have any suggestions but I don't think it's about smells or jealousy. I think it's about territory. Once one cat leaves, the other cat "owns" parts of the house now. See if they do that everywhere to each other.

Actually you could try taking that cat out and leaving the other cat in. Use this as a last resort. I have no idea what's going to happen.
It's because they smell different than each other. Try putting a little cologne or baby powder on your hands and then petting both of them so they both smell the same. This also works when introducing a new pet into a home that already has pets. Good luck!
Try dabbing a bit of vanilla on top of each of their noses. They are not happy with each other because one smells strange to the other.
