I am at my wits end my 10 yr old cat will not stop pooping in the tub. what can I do any suggestions?

she has never done this before. I keep the litter box clean. and she does pee in it.
Answers:
Take her to the vet for a thorough checkup - she may have developed a health problem that is causing her stress.

Some cats are pickier about where they poop than where they pee. Does she only have one litterbox? Try adding another - some cats prefer having one to pee in %26 one to poop in. Also, most litterboxes are too small for an adult cat to move around freely in - especially an older cat who may be beginning to get a bit stiff. Get jumbo-sized litterboxes or large plastic tote boxes, and make sure they're located in a quiet place that is easily accessible to her (not near any noisy appliances, or where other animals or kids may bother her when she's in the box), and that the openings are large enough for her to get in comfortably. You may need to cut the opening larger for her, and if the box comes with a plastic flap over the door, remove it. If her litterbox has been in use for some time, the plastic may have absorbed odors and may need to be replaced. Cats have VERY sensitive noses %26 can smell things that we can't. If you're using a pellet-textured or scented litter, try switching to an unscented, fine-textured scoopable variety such as Cat Attract (found in pet stores). Avoid using scented litters, scented cleaners, or air fresheners near the litterboxes. If you're using a littermat, it could be bothering her paws - try using just a regular carpet mat or just sweeping frequently instead.

Stress can cause cats to go outside the box - cats can be stressed by things that are far from obvious to most people.
Yahoo won't let me post links in an answer or the source section, but there's an excellent article on about dot com about stress in cats - do a search for 'cats stress' to find it. A Feliway Comfort Zone diffuser may help with both stress and territorial issues - you can find them at most pet stores.

Hope this helps!
Keep the bathroom door closed.
My male cat poops in the tub only if he is angry at me for something...like if i go on vacation or don't get right up in the morning to feed them... it is strange but just make sure anything hasnt changed around your house that may be upseting her.
This might sound kind of gross, but I had a cat that did the same thing. So, every time I caught him doing it I would rub his nose in it.AND IT WORKED!
My fiance has a cat. I am amazed at how tempremental they can be!

I am assuming this is something new?
Have you been cleaning the tub with a new cleanser?
Are you using a new cat litter?
Have you just recently changed the location of the litter box?
Have you re painted the bathroom? Or do yo uhave a new shower curtain?

Our cat would pee in the bathroom on the floor, it took us forever to figure out that if there is a bath mat on the floor in the bathroom.. she will pee on the bathroom floor!! If there is not a mat in there we have no problems... but if we lay so much as a towel on the floor and she goes in there and sees it. She will pee! It was the same in the hallway she would be in the hall near the bathroom.. i got frusterated one day and put the litter box near where she was peeing and she stopped... never peed there again... if we move it she pees..

Cats will do that to show you they are not happy with something or they want something different...

go in the bathroom and see what changed around the time the kitty started doing that. I bet you'll find something!
squirt bottle. yes he/she will hate it but it is efficient.
Your cat may just be getting old. We had a cat poop in the tub. You can either keep the bathroom door closed and make a litter box available, you can take his food dish and place it where he is pooping (cats won't poop where they eat), or just be thankful that your cat is going in there and not on the carpet!
Our cat would go on the bathroom rug. At least it was in one area.

We had no idea why until we figured out we changed from unscented to scented cat litter. We went back to the unscented and problem stopped.
Keep her out of the bathroom for a start, put her into a room with just her food and water and the litterbox - if she goes anywhere else in the room put it into the box where it belongs, a few days of this and she'll get the idea.
