When my daughter moved they though the cat got out an ran away since they couldn't find it. Six weeks later it was found alive in the attic, the rain had left water, and possibly she may have found a mouse, but that was all she could have had. She was skinny, but she was returned and she regained her weight and is doing well. That was over a year ago.

Not very long. Cats who don't eat can develop serious medical problems within a couple of days. If a cat isn't eating, it's also possibly a symptom of an underlying problem that needs to be treated.

I can't believe that you haven't taken your kitty to the vet. Or is this just a rhetorical question? You should never allow your cat to go without food for more than two days. If it is a fat cat this is extremely dangerous and could cause death.
