How does a cat find our old house?

We have an awesome old Tom Cat who is very creative on finding whys to sneak out of the house (ie- putting his front leg under the door and shaking it until it unlatchs) Anyway twice he has gotten out %26 after 2-3 days we find him sitting on the steps at our old house over a mile away on some busy streets. How does he find his way there? Thanks!

They do it by scent actually. They are much more olfactory in their orientation than we are (visual). When I first was going to let my kittens outside (about 7 months after neutering) I was worried they would be able to find their way home as all the town houses I lived in looked alike. The lady at the shelter explained to me that they would know the scent of every animal in the area - dogs, racoons, deer, etc. and that way they would know their "territory". Yes, each individual animal whatever the species has its own scent and cats know each of their "neighbors" very well.
I dont know but thats to coolist thing I have ever heard!
Built in radar. Pets have been known to travel across state lines to find their old home. That old Tom is one cool cat.
Its a cats instinct that guides them there if they don't like the new place they go to the old place, I had 16 tom cats and they all did that ,the only way to stop is to cover their face when driving to the new place since cats sense of smell and eyesight are very good, the rest is just the instinct.
My cat did the very same thing... same distance. "Tommy" would travel about at night quite a bit %26 apparently went the distance a time or two. Cats... like dogs ... have a remarkable sense of smell and can pick up on their own scent. When we moved... he just followed the scent he left behind from previous adventures. He made it through woods %26 city streets.
Tom cats are travelers, they a keen sence of direction, thier sence off smell and instinct will always lead them home ,i have had some over the years that, would be gone for weeks at a time ,then all of the sudden show up back at home ,and people would tell me they saw my cat a mile or 2 away from my house ,they are chaseing females, maybe he followed one ,in heat, to your old house ,if he remembers the other house ,thats why he goes there,i know you have seen the movie about a collie dog that got lost hundreds of miles from home and ,showed up at home weeks later he was not in good shape when he got there, he had walked all the way home. animals are very amazing creatures, they can do the unimagible ,dont under estimate you pets, they are true survivers, thier sences are so great,we cant even amagine, the story i told you was a true story there was even a movie, its an old movie ,i cant remember the name of it ,if your really interested in how smart our pets are ,do some reasearch ,you will be shocked,i have 2 cats %261 dog they are my best friends, take care of your tom, have him neuterd it will keep him from running off and going on buisy streets,he could get hit by a car ,he is ,being carefull ,but some people have no problem running an animal over, not every body has a love for animals, good luck with your tom ,love him lots, from an animal lover. SORRY, but the other guys are all wrong, although interesting theories. Cats actually use the magnetic fields of the earth to find their way back.

Interesting cat facts:
# Cats can judge within three inches the location of a sound being made one yard away. This is an essential skill for a predator who needs to catch a mouse hiding in tall grass.
# More than 20 muscles in each ear enable a cat to move her ears like radar dishes and pinpoint the source of a sound. The two ears can rotate in different directions, as well.
# The Ragdoll and the Maine Coon are the biggest breeds. Both can weigh 20 pounds or more.
# A cat's heart beats about twice as fast as your heart鈥攁bout 110 to 140 times a minute in the average cat.
# Cats seem to have an instinctive ability to find their way home; tests have shown that they use the earth鈥檚 magnetic fields to navigate.
# Our beloved housecats are descended from the African wildcat, a small brown tabby that today is an endangered species.
# Cats can compress or elongate their spine, making them smaller to sleep in snuggly places or longer to leap across wide open spaces.
# Protruding eyes give cats a wider angle of vision than we have. They also have great peripheral vision. Both these adaptations are advantages to animals who are both predator and prey in the wild.
