How old should a kitten be before I take him from his mother?

Getting it from a friend.
Answers:
Cat breeders (with the exception of back yard breeders who run "cat mills") do not let the kittens leave until they are 10-12 weeks old. They need this extra time to really learn the social skills necessary for life with humans.

I have two cats that came to me later (one at 12 weeks the other at 16) and they never had any litter box accidents, they adjusted quickly to other animals and the family. Everything went great and they are wonderful pets; very friendly and people loving. And I have a cat that I got at 6 weeks old and he was completely confused about the purpose of the litter box. He went everywhere. It took about 3 weeks of frustration to train him and even now, he is very skittish, and just not the best of pets.
At least 6-8 weeks old. Otherwise, the kitten has not been properly weened nor has it been properly litter box trained by its' mother.
I believe it is at least 6 weeks. They have to be completely weaned from their mother and be able to eat solid foods..unless you want to bottle feed them
at least 8-9 weeks.
6 weeks
At least eight weeks.
6 weeks at the minimum. Sometimes the mother will wean her kittens for you, but best to start at 6 weeks.
I heard eight months but that might just be for dogs.
8 weeks minimum. The usually age range is between 8 - 12 weeks old.
I think they can be separated at about 8 weeks. They should be able to eat solid food on their own and be very familiar with the litter box. Also, wait until mom has weaned them. She knows when they don't need her anymore.
it should be 8 weeks, however i was advised by my vet to wean my kittens early so they could go at 6 and a half weeks to enable my female to get spayed (she had two litters of kittens really close together) I kept one of the kittens and the early weaning didnt do any harm - she's huge now!!!
It's as important that the kitten have time with its siblings as being with its mother. Kittens can be separated from mom as soon as they are weaned and eating regular cat food.

Can you take two kittens if they are available? It's much better for a kitten to have a playmate of its own species during its "childhood".
about 6 weeks old
The kitten would be better socialized it kitty was allowed to remain with Mama cat for about 12 weeks. 6 to 8 weeks simply put, is way too young.

Yes there are cases when it is necessary to remove kittens from their Mom but if you have the option, let the kitty remain with Mom for 12 weeks.

After a month of you owning the kitty take kitty in and have it altered...the sooner the better.
about 6-8 weeks
8 weeks minimum; 10 weeks is better. If it's a Siamese, 12 weeks.
They shouldn't be younger than 6 weeks old. They may get sick if they are taken from their mother too early.
6-8 weeks old.that is when i took mine
Preferably 10-12 weeks old, so he can learn bite %26 scratch inhibition from his mother and littermates - he'll be a better pet in the long run that way.
8 weeks
Well my two new kittens were 8 weeks old, anything younger than that would be to young to be taken from the mother.
they need their mother until then and if taken to young will be meowing missing their mother and may have a hard time to eat and drink because they were taken away to young.Kittens are well worth the wait.

good luck and please wait till they are old enough.
