How do you get a 5-year old cat to learn to use a litter box?

My cat has never had a litter box. He always used the cat door to go outside but now we are selling our house and moving into an apartment. I've locked the cat door and tried to get him to use the box, but he will have nothing to do with it. He's not even curious about it. I think if he went in it once, he'd figure it out...but he won't! Help!! Moving in 2 weeks!

I have rescued cats before that have never seen a litter box. If you dig a small amount of dirt from outside and spread it thinly over top of litter, kitty will smell dirt and go there. You may have to show it to him several times, because he is used to going where ever he wants. Once he has used it this way for a few days, you can stop adding dirt.
take his paw and rub it down the litter box while it has the grey stuff in it hell use it know
Perhaps the new house will give him a new approach to his toilet habits. If he is not allowed outside in the new residence, he will have to get used to the idea of the litter box...make sure that he knows where it is...maybe even keep the cat locked up in the one room that has the litter for the first few days so that he gets the point...good luck
Try taking a small stick and measure it's tail using the stick and break the stick exactly at the tip of the tail. Then place the stick on its litter box. He would be going to instantly.I've try it a few times and it works.
if u want a cat to listen u should get the young
I'd try the same approach as vets recommend with kittens: It may seem cruel, but for 2-3 days keep the cat in the room where his/her litterbox will stay. (I use my small powder room, leaving her very little alternative potty places) You can let him out to play for only short periods of time (or even better, my vet recommended that I go %26 play with her in that room w/ the door shut). By doing this, your cat will find his place on his own, %26 not be tempted by other potty areas...
Since this is a fresh start for your cat, I'd also recommend starting him with an alternative pine litter such as Feline Pine. Some cats have a difficult time adjusting to these types, but since your starting fresh, he won't know the difference. Since my cats litter is in such a tiny space, I've had some major odor problems. I've tried TONS of different litters to mask it or get rid of it, %26 this is the only stuff that's worked...I think something about the chemical makeup of pine wood neutralizes ammonia...whatever.. It works!
This is a hard one maybe if you put it outside close for awhile and then gradually move it in to the house he may relate to using it, if not phone the vet and get some advice on what to do or you can post another question her and have the subject vet advice needed and they may be able to help you.
good luck and keep us updated on what happens.
It's hard to teach them when they're that old. When he pees in the house, soak it up with paper towels and put a piece of the wet paper towel in his box. That will help him realize it's "his territory".
